Taking the Initiative
Transition Towns is a movement that was founded in Totnes, Devon by permaculture designer and environmentalist Rob Hopkins (pictured on menu page) during 2005-6. The aim of the project is to equip communities for the dual challenges of climate change and peak oil, by raising awareness of sustainable living and building local resilience. Communities are encouraged to seek out methods for reducing energy usage, as well as increasing their own self reliance - a slogan of the movement being “Food feet, not Food miles!” There are now numerous Transition Town initiatives in the UK and the movement has member communities in a number of countries worldwide.
The Transition concept emerged from work Rob Hopkins had done with the students of Kinsale Further Education College in writing an "Energy Descent Action Plan". Here, Rob talks about the creation of Transition Town Totnes and how its impact can develop to transform our future way of life.12 mins
