In the Shadow of a Saint

Ken Wiwa is a journalist and prominent human rights campaigner, particularly with regard to issues concerning the Ogoni people of Nigeria. His father Ken Saro-Wiwa, one of the country’s best loved writers was executed by the Nigerian authorities in 1995. He became a focal point of the struggle for Ogoni rights, and their fight against Shell oil became known internationally.

Following the oil exploration of the Niger delta, the Ogoni drove Shell out in 1993, but many of the effects remain. The acclaimed book by Ken Wiwa, “In the Shadow of a Saint” was a personal memoir of a journey to understand the legacy of his father.
