Chechnya - Last Call Before Forgetting

When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, Chechnya proclaimed itself independent of Russia. In December 1994 Russian troops entered Chechnya to quash the independence movement. It’s estimated that 100,000 people, including many civilians, died during the resulting war. Russian forces were again deployed in Chechnya in 1999 and open conflict has continued.
